Mater Hospital
About the Mater Hospital
The Mater Hospital is a facility of St Vincents and Mater Health. It is the largest joint replacement hospital in the southern hemisphere, with approximately 1500 joint replacement operations taking place at the hospital each year. The physiotherapists and nursing staff are particularly familiar with this type of surgery and can really make a difference to patients in the early weeks following their recovery. After discharge from the hospital, The Mater Hospital offers a very successful out-patient rehabilitation service whereby patients are able to go home and attend rehabilitation and therapy each day.
The Mater Hospital is situated in Rocklands Road in North Sydney (or you may think of it as Crows Nest). It is a not-for-profit private hospital surrounded by lovely gardens. There is a pharmacy and café in hospital. Hospital parking is available for visitors at a cost of $5.00 for 1 hour or $7.50 for 2 hours. The hospital is only 10 minutes from the city and can be conveniently accessed by car or by buses which run along the Pacific Highway.
Your hospital stay
The admission staff will contact you a day or two before your surgery to let you know what time you should arrive at the hospital. Usually, you will be required to arrive at around 3pm and Dr Walter will see you in your room the afternoon or evening before your surgery. The joint which is being operated on is marked with a pen by the surgical team the night before your operation. Your anaesthetist will also visit you to discuss the anaesthetic and answer any concerns you may have.
The Mater Hospital is an excellent facility. When you book your surgery, we will give you a comprehensive booklet which explains what happens during your hospital stay. This is recommended reading for patients having surgery. You should direct questions about your hospital stay to the staff at the pre-admission clinic, as they are in the best position to help you. |
